Bausch & Lomb Issue World Wide Recall

NEW YORK, May 16 (newratings.com) – Bausch & Lomb (BOL.NYS) Monday announced the permanent withdrawal of its contact lens solution ReNu with MoistureLoc from all markets across the globe. The decision follows increasing evidence regarding a potential eye infection that could result in blindness.

Bausch & Lomb announced that some aspect of the MositureLoc formula could increase the relative risk of eye infection in certain unusual circumstances. The company has advised consumers to use its other lens cleaners, which use a different formulation to kill fungus. The company’s chief executive officer, Ronald Zarella, stated that the recall was expected to cost around $50-$70 million. The company will also lose sales worth $100 million due to the recall, Zarella added.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said that it supported Bausch & Lomb's recall of the MoistureLoc brand. The FDA mentioned that the spread of the Fusarium infection appeared to be related to the design and use of Bausch & Lomb's ReNu solution with the MoistureLoc formula.The company had withdrawn the solution from US markets earlier this month and some Asian markets earlier this year.
